In advance of Interfilière Los Angles intimate apparel show where we will be co-exhibiting to share our collaborative textile innovation, we were fortunate to meet with Pacific Textile’s Robert Masanari Murakami, General Manager, R&D Division and Ronald Chan, Manager R&D Division, Inno-Tech Dept., to gain a bit more insight on how Hyosung and Pacific Textiles formed their collaborative partnership.
When did Pacific Textiles and Hyosung begin working together and how?
Pacific Textiles is a leading global manufacturer specializing in premium fabric engineering. To fully unlock the potential of high-performance knits, innovation must begin at the fiber source — which is why our strategic partnership with Hyosung dates back to 2008. Through this “Mill Partner Spotlight,” we are proud to showcase the evolution of this long-standing collaboration. By seamlessly integrating Hyosung’s advanced fibers with our knitting expertise, we demonstrate how this strategic alignment rapidly turns technical concepts into functional products that directly meet today’s market demands.

What does Pacific Textiles look for when selecting a fiber company to partner with?
When selecting a fiber partner, we look for a mutual commitment to high-performance innovation and strong R&D synergy. We value partners who don’t just supply raw materials, but who are ready to co-create premium technical recipes with us. Ultimately, we seek fiber innovators who share our vision of driving a collaborative cycle across the value chain, ensuring that together, we can deliver high-efficiency, functional products that precisely serve today’s retail reality.

Why do you think Pacific Textiles and Hyosung have become such strong partners over the years?
The enduring partnership between Pacific Textiles and Hyosung over the years is built on shared tier-one credibility, consistent quality, and a deeply synchronized supply chain that meets the rigorous demands of the world’s leading apparel brands. Our long-term alliance thrives on three core pillars:
(1) Joint Credibility to Secure Tier-One Brands
The Synergy: Global apparel giants do not just buy fabric; they look for absolute supply chain confidence. Hyosung is a globally recognized pioneer in fiber technology, and Pacific Textiles is an industry leader in high-precision, high-gauge knitting. Over the years, when global brands specify high-performance or sustainable requirements, the combination of Hyosung’s premium ingredient branding and Pacific’s manufacturing reputation creates an instant “gold standard.” This shared market credibility makes our joint offerings highly attractive to top-tier brand decision-makers.
(2) Industrial Consistency and Material Reliability
The Synergy: High-density knitting and advanced fabric architectures are highly sensitive to raw material variance; even minor inconsistencies in yarn elongation or recovery can lead to high factory defect rates. Hyosung has proven itself over the years as a reliable partner capable of delivering exceptional uniformity at an immense commercial scale. This technical consistency minimizes production friction in Pacific’s facilities, ensuring that our high-volume output always meets strict global quality standards.
(3) Proactive Alignment on Industry Evolution
The Synergy: The textile market has undergone massive shifts over the years, moving from basic synthetic performance to deep sustainable compliance. Pacific and Hyosung have remained strong partners because our business roadmaps evolve in lockstep. Whenever consumer demands shift, Hyosung is quick to innovate at the fiber level, and Pacific has the immediate technical agility to adopt and commercialize those fibers. This long-term alignment ensures that both companies always remain ahead of the market curve together.

Can you give an example of how both companies have worked together to anticipate brand developers’ needs?
A perfect recent example is our strategic 3-way collaboration involving Hyosung, Lenzing, and Pacific Textiles, which was recently featured in Vogue Business. To meet the rising brand demand for luxury loungewear that bridges eco-consciousness with high-performance durability, we developed a precision-engineered collection. In this partnership, we look at fabric creation like a master-level recipe: Hyosung provides the premium raw elastic base with their Bio-based Spandex, Lenzing supplies the natural fibers to elevate next-to-skin comfort, and Pacific Textiles acts as the “Master Chef.” Premium ingredients mean nothing without master-level execution; bio-based spandex and heavy-knit blends behave unpredictably under raw heat and tension. Through Pacific Textiles’ advanced technical engineering, we successfully overcame common industry pain points for brands:
(1) Eliminating Micro-Fuzzing & Pilling: Cellulosic blends are often prone to friction-induced pilling. By engineering an ultra-dense knit structure with Hyosung’s premium spandex, we successfully locked the fine yarns into a stable matrix, achieving exceptional surface smoothness and a long-lasting, luxury appearance.
(2) Preventing Sagging & Deformation: Heavy-knit structures frequently suffer from “bagging out” and losing their shape over time. We optimized our tension control to secure the multi-component blend, ensuring superior multidirectional shape recovery and outstanding garment stability. By controlling the exact heat, tension and chemistry, this 3-way collaboration successfully delivers elite dimensional control, outstanding shape retention, and premium comfort — directly anticipating and solving the structural challenges that apparel brand developers face today.

What new textile trends do you see in the apparel market?
We see a major market shift where the boundaries of performance, next-to-skin luxury, and sustainability are being completely rewritten, particularly in the next-gen intimates and bodywear sectors for US/EU markets. Driven by our “Pacific Textiles-Led Initiative,” we are addressing three major industry trends through our signature tech solutions:
(1) The Ultra-High Gauge Spun Yarn Revolution: Brands are demanding ultra-lightweight luxury fabrics that literally melt onto the body without sacrificing performance. Knitting natural spun yarn into an ultra-fine matrix is a massive technical challenge due to yarn friction. Demonstrating our precision craftsmanship, we successfully knitted Lenzing Tencel™ Lyocell and Micro Modal spun yarns with Hyosung’s sustainable bio-based spandex. This creates a featherweight, “second-skin” fabric that conquers previous technical barriers—delivering massive dynamic stretch, exceptional shape recovery, and inherent quick-dry properties.
(2) Next-Gen Soft Shapewear: Traditional shapewear is often restrictive and stiff. The market is shifting toward low-impact compression that offers feather-light, soft-stretch recovery. We achieved this by blending premium Jacquard Interlock with TENCEL™ Micro Modal Air and Hyosung CREORA® EasyFlex Spandex, re-engineering the texture to deliver soft, zero-restriction support.
(3) High-Performance 3D Foam Alternatives: There is a strong market demand for breathable, lightweight alternatives to traditional synthetic foam bra cups. Our 3D Eco-Spacer Technology offers the perfect functional solution. Featuring a sustainable 3D cushioning structure knitted with Hyosung’s eco-friendly spandex and EcoVero™ Black, it delivers superior breathability and excellent shape support, while successfully eliminating the wastewater and heavy chemical processing of traditional piece dyeing.
Will you be exhibiting at any forthcoming tradeshows that we should be aware of?
Yes, absolutely. In addition to exhibiting at Interfilière LA this month, we are also preparing for Intertextile Shanghai at the end of August. Moving forward, we are actively expanding our global presence by participating in more international tradeshows. We highly look forward to connecting with a wider and more diverse range of global customers across these premier industry platforms.

What is new and exciting on the horizon for Pacific Textiles?
What is most exciting on our horizon goes far beyond simple fabric manufacturing – we are actively building a global infrastructure for premium co-creation. Our current 3-way mill-level collaboration with Hyosung and Lenzing serves as our first successful proof of concept. The grand goal for Pacific Textiles is to shift the industry from a raw material reliance to master-level technical execution.
To achieve this, we want to expand our co-creation circle into a seamless, “Farm to Table” collaborative cycle. The next phase is about inviting global garment manufacturers, fashion brands, and retailers into this circle. By establishing an unshakeable connection from the fiber source to fabric engineering, and all the way to flawless garment tailoring and the ultimate retail reality, we aim to scale up our shared global impact.
Let us lead this cycle together. By expanding this circle, we ensure our high-performance product portfolio dynamically evolves to meet the precise lifestyle demands of today’s global consumers, serving the market with unmatched excellence.
Thanks to Mr. Masanari Murakami, and Mr Chan for their time and sharing their great insights for this article!
