Team Member Spotlight on Teddy Oh, Assistant Marketing Communications Manager – Textiles
We are so excited to shine our Team Member Spotlight this month on Teddy Oh! From organizing Hyosung TNC’s international trade shows; developing digital AD campaigns, social media strategies and videos; overseeing global public relations initiatives; and nearly all the company’s marketing materials, somehow Teddy still finds time to study German, which he plans to add to his spoken list of foreign languages. If you have not had the good fortune to meet Teddy at a trade show or industry event, we hope the below conversation will help you get to know him a bit. Enjoy!
How did you find your way into the textile industry?
Since I was young (perhaps a middle school student), I wanted to be designer in the fashion field. I had this motivation after watching the movie The Devil Wears Prada. It was hard to start studying design at that time, so I found an easier way to study a related field. So, I majored in Textile and Clothing at University. By the time I graduated, I was considering whether to studying abroad for Design and getting a job. I chose the job and joined Hyosung in 2018!
What led you to Hyosung?
I had a friend who was already working with Hyosung a year beforehand. So, I not only heard about Hyosung a lot, but also discovered that Hyosung is a “Global Spandex Manufacturer”. So naturally I applied at the company with some expectation that I would have the opportunity of working globally if I was hired.
What do you like best about your role at Hyosung?
Definitely all of the communication activities! But among them, I would like to say my favorite is the most traditional communication segment – PR. I would definitely say my perspective has broadened through my PR role, and how good public relations many benefits can shape a company. And – must say that I am very happy to be working alongside our PR consultant. We have good synergy together!
Do you have a favorite Hyosung fiber and if so, what is it?
These days I would say it’s regen BIO spandex. I’ve recently spent a lot of marketing communications time on the introduction of regen BIO. My big interest matches my effort towards successfully introducing the fiber.
What is your favorite fashion brand, and do you shop for vintage pieces?
I am quite an agile and fickle person, so my taste is always changing. Thus, I my favorite brand is not always fixed. Recently I am interested in Jacquemus – a French brand.
Who/what inspires you and why?
It’s tough question. I don’t think about it much…maybe myself? If I say that I get inspiration from myself, people might think that is weird. But I try not let others impact me through my experiences.
What do you enjoy doing on your time away from work?
It is shameful to say, but TV is my friend! Whenever I have free time, I watch all the TV platforms – Netflix, Disney, Apple TV, etc. Do you have this experience – that you are happy that there are several series to watch in your free time? I am the person like that!
What music are you listening to?
Mainly K-POP. I don’t have a specific taste in music. I enjoy listening to the Billboard Top 100 list music on the Melon application (Korea Music streaming service). If I am really stressed, then I often listen Chopin, Nocturne in E-flat Major, Op.9 No.2 by Seong jin Cho, who was the winner in the International Frederick Chopin Piano Competition in 2015. It makes me feel calm when I listen to it.
What are you looking forward to this year?
Not being too stuck with reality. Challenging something – even simple things – that I’ve never done before.
You travel quite a bit – where is one place you’ve never been, but is high on your list to visit?
A few days ago, I watched a travel program that highlighted Portugal and Mexico. In Korea, these countries are not familiar travel places. So, I would like to go there if I have a chance someday!
For someone who has never been to Seoul, what is on the top of your list of places one must visit?
My recommendation is Yeouido. There is a department store, which opened recently. It is the most-trendy place in Korea for looking around. And after that you can enjoy the Han River since it’s very close from there! The next place is Gwanghwamun, which is central to Seoul. It has many merits for visiting to include several cultural and historical sites.
Thank you for your time Teddy! We will see you soon!
